the concept on discourse community

The Concept of discourse community by John Swales is a diverse group of people who’s goals of what they want to accomplish bring them together by telephone, or through written documents and the meetings are usually arranged through them. the difference between a discourse community from a speech community is the main communication between its life long members and people with the same interest who want to improve their group in means of their goals. They don’t form a speech community because the diverse members can be living from a wide range of places, as long as they respond to the written document of the groups interest. When a discourse community comes together their exchange of words to each other usually ends in agreement with no arguments because everyone wants to achieve the same end goal. The speech community differs in such ways that they have conferences with each other in the arrangements they make to agree on what the group needs to achieve their goal. Another difference again between discourse and a speech community is their how they have more common interest between their group despite how the discourse community members come together for interest they share is only what the group stands for and discuss mainly what their goals are. In a discourse community the language can be different in that group, an example from this specialization in language was HKSC or ESL, abbreviations are used more commonly in the group whose members have more experience in the community. Discourse community’s are kept together by goals that uses persuasion to attract members while speech community’s are kept together by the communicative needs of the group that is composed of its birth members who reguarlly and who’s communicative needs shape their members socially and personally on how they think of their group issues and what they’ll do to address them.
